Review of Skyfall ( 2012 )

Skyfall – This movie has many negative than the positives going for it.
Let me get the positives out of the way first. The first thing you will be impressed by this film will be that of Javier Bardem’ acting. He gives yet again another powerful performance, which might give him an outside chance at having a shot at the nominations for the oscars. Then there’s M who also does her part quite well. And this time we also get to see a part of Bond where he’s broken down both physically and mentally. And in this film we indeed do get to see him deliver his trademark dialogue ” The Name’s Bond, James Bond” . Also the opening credit sequence and the Adele song are also  very well done.

Now coming back to the negatives.
The plot of the movie where MI6 gets breached and all the intel being stolen has been done in many spy movies. The movie also focuses on Bond’s background and upbringing, rather than focussing on saving the world kind of stuff that we usually see. And if am not mistaken this has to be the only movie where the “ Bond Girl “ has the least amount of time on screen. I think she has totally about just about 5-6 minutes in the movie which was a big letdown for me. And another thing going against for this movie was the lack of gadgets being used in the movie, which again is a trademark of the Bond Movies. Instead we see Bond being resorted to place where it is devoid of technology and forced to make Booby traps, which was just pathetic.
The movie also consisted of many plot holes which I won’t be revealing right now in order to avoid any spoilers for those who are yet to see the film.

The bottom line is you can still go and have fun at the cinemas but don’t expect it to be like the good old Bond films that we grown to love.

Review of Cloud Atlas (2012)

So I saw Cloud Atlas today and it is an incredibly shot Epic Movie.

I’ll admit I was never a big fan of The Matrix and the first time i saw the trailer for this movie i was sucked into it, because you don’t ever see a trailer that’s five minutes long and still expect it to be just a single stand alone movie. But the Wachowski brothers have pulled off a great job in bringing to screen another great story. The Ensemble cast have done a great job. This movie is about six different stories taking place during different time period but all the stories have a similarity which goes on to explain that there will be consequences for all actions that one does during their different reincarnation. This sort of like the ripple effect. The Background is definitely one of the best of this year so far. And the movie as a whole is also right up there  with my top five of the year. Based on the complexity of the movie it’s no wonder that it’s hard to sell. But this is the kind of movie like other classics that as time goes on and after much repeated viewing the viewer will completely fall in love with it. Definitely one to watch on the Big Screen. And if time permits I’d surely be watching it at the cinemas once more!

Review of Maatraan (2012)

ImageMaatraan – Where do I even begin to describe what a big
waste of time this film was.Even from the look of the trailers I wasn’t exactly sold
to go see the movie, but a free ticket on the first day
of a Tamil movie was too good an opportunity to pass
on,since it was starring a big name actor and I had
wanted to see what it’d feel like and boy was i
disappointed. There wasn’t anyone in the audience going
berserk like i was told they would, considering this
being a first day and all. The only time the crowd had a
few laughs was when comments were passed on how the hero
flies and fights the bad guys kind of like how Vijay and
Vijaykanth would do in their movies. Now coming to the
story, has Kollywood really lost it’s sense of Tamil
story telling even in the so-called Masala Movie?
People nowadays just copy every single concept from
different movies and try to cramp it into one big piece
of garbage movie like this. And let’s not even talk about
the heroine who in this film is used for some song &
Dance sequences and doing the role of a glamorous
translator.Another thing that was bugging me was how our
hero doesn’t speak english with those Ukrainians
considering that he comes from a rich family and
business background, and also the so called Ukrainian
official who are an Army general and a world famous
scientist both of whom don’t know any English. But this
could easily be explained as they wanted to keep the
“glamour quotient” in each and every screen time
available as the “Translator” and nothing more.Is this
really all the craft that Kollywood has got to offer
then I’ve to say am very disappointed and not really
looking forward to anymore films until maybe when Mani
Rathnam releases his next film Kadal, until then I
probably this might very well be my last Tamil film for
a while.

Review of Resident Evil : Retribution (2012)

I was eagerly looking forward to the 5th installment of this series and I am sorry to say that I have been really let down! Apart from the once in a while visuals, the movie has not been able to get even close to expectations. The first 10 minutes of the movie and you will start feeling disconnected from the movie already not caring at all what is gonna happen in the next scene. After resident evil 3 & 4, I was expecting a lot out of this installment and from Paul W.S. Anderson but he has not been able to live up the mark at all. The action scenes rather than being nail-biting, turned out to be hilarious and funny. There isn’t a single moment in the movie where you are actually glued to screen. Milla Jovovich looks pretty as always, but that won’t save the movie. All others have done a horrible job with their acting, especially Sienna Guillory. I would say that the only reason you would want to watch this movie is if you are a fan of the resident evil series and you don’t mind wasting your money and time for the sake of this series.

Review of The Amazing Spiderman (2012)

Just saw The Amazing Spiderman. It was really good. This is certainly a much darker one from the previous film,it also stays true to it comic book roots. This is kinda like batman begins where they dwell a lot into the characters early roots and do it in a more dark tone. Also garfield portrays Peter Parker just like in the comic books. The only problem that most people find with t…his the lack of action scences. But i dont mind that because just like Batman begins, after showing us the beginning of the character it nicely sets up the movie for its sequels. Also the 3D sequences are one of the best ever portrayed in an action movie after Avatar, full marks to Marc Webb on that part. Also do stay tuned for the post credit scene as it makes you want to see the next film and you will know exactly how true this movie is to the original Spiderman comic book than the Sam Raimi’s one. PS: I dont know if its just in my theater or every where else too but one of the scenes from the TV spots where Peter runs into the door man at the building before he comes through the fire escape into Gwen’s room was not shown! Please let me know if they showed it or not in your theater as well.

Review of The Raid Redemption (2012)

So i finally got to see The Raid Redemption and can say that it is easily one of the best action movies in years. It is just pure nonstop adrenaline pumping action throughout the film. The fight sequences were beautifully choreographed, just imagine Jackie Chan fight sequences, but with only guns, knives, blood and gore, instead of the sand bags and his trademark jackets. Also the background score is one of the best for an action movie. It’s a must watch for any action junkie.

Review of Brave (2012)

Just saw Brave. Its certainly a lift for pixar after the cars 2 debacle. But by no means is it perfect. There’s nothing new with  the story, but it was executed nicely. Also I think we are seeing a trend in animation movies where the comedic relief is always being produced by someone who is tiny and cute. I would’ve preferred to see it from something else as it gets a bit tiring with the same routine. So overall the movie is ok,though slow at times. But it will provide entertainment at the end of the day.

Review of The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

The Epic conclusion to the trilogy. Just came out from ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Not as mesmerizing as The Dark Knight ,but still Christopher Nolan executed a legendary ending to the series with breathtaking visual moments and fine performances. The film starts of a bit slow and the action just heats up in the 3rd act which was a big let down for me.Hans Zimmer ‘s score is phenomenal , the Bane Chant wherever he used was epic.Christian Bale continued his legacy in the third part too. om Hardy was a beefy substitute for Heath Ledger in a hell of a villain as the merciless and destructive evil.Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman reprise’s there roles as strong as it’s been throughout the series.Joseph Gordon-Levitt did a fair job as the detective and Marion Cotillard was ok as Miranda Tate.Anne Hatheway as CatWoman was just a sidekick and nothing much performance wise from her We may never see superhero films quite like these again, and that’s fine.Nolan had ended on his own terms. If plans arise to reboot the “Batman” films a few years from now, I wish you luck. The bar is as high as it could possibly be.The only drawback is that Nolan had set the bar too high for himself with his second film that he couldn’t deliver a masterpiece that we expected it to be.The films plot was too chaotic and never once felt like a superhero movie. That was my main disappointment from this film.

Review of Rock Of Ages (2012)

Rock of ages : It’s a cheese fest let me tell you that, boy meets girl both fall in love and then split up over a small misunderstanding before all things are patched up and good at the end. Yeah I know we have seen that story a million times, but that is just used as a plot to play a bunch of songs. The casting of this movie its biggest drawback, when it could have been done better. Catherine zet…a Jones wasn’t any where close to what she was from Chicago her dance and acting were so difficult to watch. And the two lovers weren’t anything to speak of as well both lacked character and chemistry. And Malik Ackerman was just used as an eye candy and nothing else. Paul giamatti does what best could be done with his role. The comedic relief of Russel brand and Alec Baldwin is also spot on.  The only good thing about this movie and which holds it together is Tom cruise. He is perfect for the role of the Rock God stacee jaxx and pulls it off effortlessly, you can see the amount of hard work he puts into each character he plays from this one. You can go watch this one especially for Tom’s performance and also it’s good to watch something fresh like a musical in the summer for a change instead of the usual CGI – fest that’s playing everywhere. Definitely a lot of fun and fans of rock and roll will love it. Though this movie won’t have a big opening weekend, it will surely have legs to play on for a long time and make money. Considering its 80’s rock & roll and also it being a musical.
